The battle between the two hit first person shooters rages on with Battlefield 3 taking the lead in pre-order sales at U.S. retailer Gamestop. It’s the same story at amazon with Battlefield 3 gaining more sales over Modern Warfare 3.
With both games scheduled for a November release there’s still quite a long fight ahead. Activision is one of the worlds biggest video game publishers gaining millions of sales every year with the Modern Warfare series and the standard Call of Duty series so it may not be so easy for EA to outsell Activison.
That being said, EA have used facebook to get over 1.1 million ‘likes’ on their page which posts previews and the latest news about Battlefield 3. They have also released a lot more info about Battlefield 3 whereas Activision have not released that much on Modern Warfare 3.
And from what I’ve seen, Battlefield 3 seems to be pushing a lot more boundaries that it’s rival Modern Warfare 3. Activision seem to be sticking with the MW2 engine and by looking at the trailers it seems as if they’ve stuck with the same old settings. Yeah, adding 4 different countries to fight in may sound cool, but does it really make that much difference when you’re shooting at the same enemies and constantly doing the same thing? It seems to me that they could have just released an expansion onto Modern Warfare 2 and called it ‘It’s the Russians….Again.”
The Modern Warfare series has always sold well. So why should Activision change something that usually sells so well? Because it starts to get boring that’s why. The Modern Warfare series was innovative and addicting a few years ago but it’s just being dragged on a little too much. I don’t care if you add the ability to customise my killstreaks, character or emblem, the game will still be boring but it’ll look all showy which I think is something that just seems to appeal to the people who look for good looks, not gameplay.
Infinity Ward is keeping the same visuals, the same character models, the same guns and the same graphics. Whereas DICE are upping their game and are all set to bring the FPS crown to the EA.
I’ll leave you with a little comment that I found on the forums at enterbf3.com. Someone commented that Infinity Ward are scared of BF3 and then someone replied with: “They are not scared one bit, they couldn’t care less. They are still laughing as they swim and will continue to swim in the piles of money they have.” This sums up Infinity Ward’s and Activision’s situation at the moment perfectly.
