As with the recent release of the Source Film-maker on Steam, many users have been digging deep into its files to see if there is anything of great value – and in the past couple of days they have done just that. With the rise of Cryengine and Unreal Engine 4, Valve has been starting to lag behind on the engine department. The original Source engine came out way back in 2004, and the unreleased Counter Strike: Global Offensive is still using that engine. The engine is still slow, sluggish, and lacks the material and model support that these modern engines show off. However, looking into the Source Film-maker files, pointers and strings containing “Source engine 2″ have been popping up everywhere, an obvious sign that something is coming around the corner. As well as that, the images and thumbnails for new development tools for the “Source engine 2″ were also included in the files. A deliberate hint, perhaps? We can only wait and see.
