It’s music to my ears more video games are becoming free, two more big MMOs are going free to play. Long running fantasy MMORPG Everquest 2 and science fiction MMO Star Trek Online. Two big games with large communities are joining the trending and very profitable free to play model. It’s great to see more big titles are going free to play and not just the smaller lesser known titles.
Sony Online’s Everquest II is going free to play sometime early next month and at a great time it just celebrated its seventh year anniversary. It will merge all services within Everquest II including the current limited free to play version for the game, Everquest II Extended, into one free to play model. There will also be a new expansion pack to the game early next month to accompany the free to play transition. A port to the PS3 would also be a nice way to gain interest into this game that has held the attention of gamers for seven years.
Star Trek Online will be jumping to free to play early next year on January 17. While the game has not been well received it has garnered the interest of Star Trek fans. The switch to free to play will almost certainly bring in new players in significant amounts. Recently DC Universe Online has proved that there are many gamers interested in free to play, 1 million people joined DCUO in its first week of the transition with players split 50/50 across PS3 and PC.
